Rajesh Patil was born to poor farmworkers in the backward Khandesh region of Maharashtra. He worked as a child labourer picking cotton, selling bread, and doing small jobs. But what set him apart was that, unlike most of his peers, he was driven by an intense desire to improve his lot through education. By dint of his hard work, he managed to get into the Indian Statistical Service, but the Indian Administrative Service was his goal. Unsuccessful at first, he persisted until eventually he cracked the competitive exams and qualified for the IAS. Maa, I've Become a Collector is the inspiring account of Rajesh's struggles that has been a bestseller in Marathi, Hindi, Gujarati and Odia and motivated thousands of students in India's hinterlands in their quest for a better life. Book Thief.jpg

The Book Thief tells the story of Liesel, a little girl who is taken to a new home because her mother can't afford to take care of her. The story is told by Death, who becomes a character you come to respect and even feel sorry for by the end. The narration puts an odd perspective on the story. Much of what Death says is very philosophical, and even beautiful.

The Book Thief is set in Nazi Germany, at the start of World War Two. On the journey to her new home, Liesel's younger brother dies and she steals her first book: The Gravedigger's Handbook. When she arrives at her new home, she suddenly has a new mama and papa. Haunted every night by nightmares of her brother's death, Liesel and her Papa set themselves the challenge of reading the book, Liesel's last link to her brother. The Book Thief leaves behind a sense of guilt, in some ways. Because it is the British bombs that are falling in Germany, the British who kill so many in the story and leave the reader's cheeks soaked in tears.

CHASE YOUR LIFE.jpg

The book is divided into three main parts under which there are sub-parts, viz Train your mind, Face the storm, Chase your life. The author has included real-life examples that she has come across or ones that she knows about and used those examples to give us a lesson about what we are supposed to do or don't in times like that. The author has put down some exercises that we may implement while reading the book. Most of the time we usually know the response to a situation but we have a hard time implementing it on our own. For eg, in the event of any sadness, we know we are supposed to stop crying but most of the time we are unable to do so unless someone tells us to do so. Similarly, I believe that there is a need for a book like this to keep us on a right track. I believe that this book can help any person who is having a lot of trouble to keep themselves focused and on the path of their dreams. The ultimate goal of the book is simple yet effective. I enjoyed reading the book and hope you will do too.

secret.jpg

According to the author, the book makes proper use of the 'law of attraction? and shows how positive thinking can open a treasure trove of bountiful happiness, health, and wealth. The book posits the law of attraction as a primeval law that completes the law of the universe (as well as our lives) through the process 'like attracts like?. The author is also of the view that as people think and feel, so do they send a corresponding frequency to the universe that in turn attracts events and circumstances of the same frequency. Hence, if one is always able to think positively and think right, naturally, one will obtain the best results always. In all this argument, however, there is no scientific basis for the views expressed as to how such 'attraction' affects the biological and physical processes of the body.

There are too many things one can learn from “The Alchemist”. It's all about following your dream and about taking the risk of following your dreams, which is actually so difficult to do and there are very few people in this world who actually do, I mean risk it all, just to follow your heart and your dream. Beauty is, the author is so right in saying that when u decide to follow your dreams the entire universe conspires in your favour which he called the “beginners luck” and we all have been witness to this beginners luck at one or other point in our lives. Also, he talks about a stage in our journey towards realizing our dreams, where everything just goes haywire and there is everything working against us and it almost takes us to the brink of abandoning everything and just getting back to what was so familiar and comfortable.

There are not many Indian heroes whose lives have been as dramatic and adventurous as that of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. That, however, is an assessment of his life based on what is widely known about him. These often revolve around his resignation from the Indian Civil Service, joining the freedom movement, being exiled twice for over seven years, throwing a challenge to the Gandhian leadership in the Congress, taking up an extremist position against the British Raj, evading the famed intelligence network to travel to Europe and then to Southeast Asia, forming two Governments and raising two armies and then disappearing into the unknown. All this in a span of just two decades.

TimesBetween January and August 1947 the conflicting political, religious and social tensions in India culminated in independence from Britain and the creation of Pakistan; in Partition, Barney White-Spinner shines a light on those turbulent months. This period saw the end of ninety years of the British Raj, and the effective power of the Maharajahs, as the Congress Party established itself, commanding a democratic government in Delhi. It also witnessed the rushed creation of Pakistan as a country in two halves whose capitals were 2000 kilometres apart. From September to December 1947 the euphoria surrounding independence dissipated into shame and incrimination; nearly one million people died and countless more lost their homes and their livelihoods as partition was realised.

At that time Rome was a prosperous country in the world. As the most powerful man, he might also have felt like the loneliest man in the world, his life was too difficult it seemed that he had nobody to talk to but himself. The Roman public loved Marcus Aurelius, and he did his best to provide for his citizens through trying times, such as the Antonine Plague. Written with good research and based on facts. At a time when the medicine is a highly sought-after career for Indian women, it is hard to imagine what it was like for the pioneers. In Lady Doctors, Kavitha Rao unearths the extraordinary stories of six women from the 1860s to the 1930s, who defied the idea that they were unfit for medicine by virtue of their gender. From Anandibai Joshi, who broke caste rules by crossing an ocean, to Rukhmabai Raut, who escaped a child marriage, divorced her husband, and studied to be a doctor; from Kadambini Ganguly, who took care of eight children while she worked, to child widow Haimabati Sen, who overcame poverty and hardship—these women had a profound and lasting impact. And in their forgotten lives lie many lessons for modern women. all stalwarts in their own right - to fight caste and gender discrimination, child marriage, and other evils that devoured our society in the 19th and 20th centuries. The book duly notes that they were supported by men, either their husbands or their fathers. These women pioneers could achieve very little in a male-dominated society without the support of the men in their lives. But that doesn't take away any credit from these women who stood their ground. We have come a long way as a society, and we have a long way to go

Daniel Kahneman is one of the only psychologists to receive a Nobel Prize in Economics, and it is a well-researched writer. It’s a great body of work that he’s created, and the overarching concept of the book (differences between systems 1 and 2) is a concept that everyone should know about. This book tries to explain to general readers that the mind has two systems: System 1, intuitive and quick-moving; and System 2, more deliberative and logical. On the whole humans are incredibly good at making bad decisions because they allow emotions and moral values to prevail over good sense and simple mathematical calculation. We make snap decisions based on our intuition (fast thinking) and often believe our intuition is superior to logic (slow thinking). For example, President Trump recently said he preferred to listen to his 'gut' to his advisors.
Kahneman examines the reasons why we make bad decisions and indicates ways in which we might make better decisions - even if the better decisions make us feel uncomfortable because they are counterintuitive.

atomic habits.jpg

This book provides supplementary material like cheat sheets and templates which are very useful for planning your own habit profile and continuous improvement.
This book is action-oriented. The concepts present an action plan for trying them in your own situation and to practice the ideas directly in day-to-day life. This makes the book an instruction manual for nurturing good habits and killing bad habits. The principle presented in the book about understanding who to become, that is finding out what identity to achieve instead of just starting or stopping a habit is very helpful.
One important aspect of this book is the to-the-point summary provided after every chapter. Once you have read the book this summary helps recall all the concepts in short time and becomes a concise model to revise the concepts.I will recommend this book for anyone who is eager to understand why habits are formed and how to nurture good habits and avoid bad ones.

David Goggins, childhood was a nightmare - poverty, prejudice, and physical abuse colored his days and haunted his nights. But through self-discipline, mental toughness, and hard work, Goggins transformed himself from a depressed, overweight young man with no future into a U.S. Armed Forces icon and one of the world's top endurance athletes. The only man in history to complete elite training as a Navy SEAL, Army Ranger, and Air Force Tactical Air Controller, he went on to set records in numerous endurance events, inspiring Outside magazine to name him "The Fittest (Real) Man in America."

In Can't Hurt Me, he shares his astonishing life story and reveals that most of us tap into only 40% of our capabilities. Goggins calls this The 40% Rule, and his story illuminates a path that anyone can follow to push past pain, demolish fear, and reach their full potential episode!

Robin Sharma is an author and motivational speaker and this book remains his magnum opus even though it was written more than a couple of decades ago. This book revolves around the life of a busy lawyer with a crazy schedule and the sole ambition of being even more successful who successfully transformed his own life. It teaches you some principles like respecting time, having a purpose, be in present, and things like that. There is nothing new in this book that you don't already know but it is still nice to read. Fluid writing, a catchy story, and obviously helpful if you are up to it. it's a best seller for a reason, & it does breathe new life & optimism into living life.

During the 1930s, Nanjing was the capital city of China and home to the country's government. The Japanese knew that Nanjing was an important target. If they could capture China's capital, they would have a much easier time expanding throughout the region. By December 13, 1937, the Japanese army captured the city of Nanjing, then the capital of wartime China. The atrocity that took place in Nanjing, in six weeks between December and January of 1937 to '38, was one of the infamous war crimes during World War II. During those six weeks, soldiers of the Imperial Japanese Army ran riot in the captured Chinese capital, the city of Nanjing. And during that time, many, many people were murdered, were raped, and were subjected to the most brutal treatment, in really a spree of violence. During the Nanjing Massacre, the Japanese killed hundreds of thousands of Chinese people. Estimates range anywhere from 200,000 to as many as 300,000. Men, women, children, and the elderly were ruthlessly murdered. In addition to mass executions, the Japanese army was responsible for raping tens of thousands of women (estimates range from 20,000 to 80,000). For this reason, the Nanjing Massacre is also referred to as the Rape of Nanjing. The scale of brutality was so massive that the Japanese were forced to more methodically conduct killings as the widespread piling of corpses on the street brought a risk of disease. As a response, they developed a “slaughter pit” system. After the Nanjing Massacre, China's capital was in complete ruins. The Japanese quickly set up their own puppet government and ruled the territory until the end of World War II. General Matsui Iwane, along with another high-ranking official, was tried for war crimes and sentenced to death.

Journeys Through Babudom and Netaland is an insightful reveal into the inside workings of the Indian judiciary and administrative system. Authored by T. S. R. Subramanian, an IAS officer and a former cabinet secretary, the book is a true account of a person who has been there, done that.

The Indian administration is known to be fraught with corruption, famous more for the scams it perpetrates than the work that it does. However, much has been done to keep things under covers, with babus and netas maintaining a tight-lipped policy about what happens behind the scene. Subramanian provides a witty and hilarious account of the actual happenings. He tells us that almost all the netas he has met are dishonest and selfish, and babus are arrogant and rude, and inept at their work.

Journeys Through Babudom and Netaland talks about the author’s personal experiences while at office. He talks about the evils in the political system in a slightly ironical tone, not adopting an all-out attacking approach.

twelve-years-a-slave-161.jpg

Solomon Northup (1808–1857) was a free-born African American from Saratoga Springs, New York. In 1841, he was kidnapped and forced into slavery for twelve years. With the help of his family and his father's former master, Northup ultimately won his freedom and took the traders who betrayed him to court. He is best known for his autobiographical account of his enslavement, Twelve Years a Slave.

This book is the story of Solomon Northup, a free man of color, living in the North during slavery. Solomon is tricked, drugged and sold into slavery. His pleas of being wrongfully enslaved are met with a beating so severe that he keeps his true identity a secret from that point on. For the next twelve years, he's sold to several ruthless, vicious and despicable slave owners. He's beaten and mistreated mercilessly, yet he never gives up hope of finally proving who he really is.

This story is absolutely heartbreaking and difficult to read, yet it's a story that must be told and should be read by everyone. Few could deny that slavery is among the most shameful acts perpetrated by one culture of people upon another. Reading a first-hand account of the atrocities of slavery details a much more compelling depiction than could ever be found in any history book.

Sadly, Solomon's story isn't unique, as there were many free people of color who had been sold into slavery by opportunists looking to make money at that time. Yet, his account of his twelve long and torturous years as a slave is a gripping and dramatic journey, as engaging as any novel.

Jagadish Chandra Bose is also known as the "Father of Radio Science" for his remarkable contribution to modern physics, especially radio science. His interest later shifted to plant physiology. His discoveries in this area of science were also renowned. However, he was forgotten by the scientific community and the rest of the world within a few decades of his death.
The Unsung Genius is a biography of JC Bose—the man, the nationalist, the scientist, and the inventor par excellence. However, it is not only confined to the life of Bose but also tells the story of the development of the radio, its pioneers including Bose and Marconi, his friendship with various individuals, and the controversy surrounding the Nobel Prize in Physics for the invention of the radio in 1909.
The book begins with stories from his childhood and moves smoothly into the next stage of his life when he returned to India and began his career as a professor at Presidency College. The third section of the book provides a concise science behind radio operation for lay readers. Even so, if they are not interested, they can skip the chapter or skim through it and still find continuity in the narrative. A substantial portion of the book is devoted to asserting why Bose, not Marconi, should have received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1909 for his research into radio waves.
The book traces the development of his life through a scientific and nationalist lens. Numerous people like Rabindranath Tagore, Swami Vivekananda, Sister Nivedita, Abala Bose, Bhagaban Bose, etc., moulded his personality, and the author has placed them in an appropriate amount of space in the book. Satyendra Bose, of Higgs boson fame, was one of many products of the Bose Institute, established by JC Bose.
Even with its scientific facts and data, the book never feels monotonous and lethargic. It connects with the seamless storytelling and perfect placement of events. A well-researched read for those interested in learning more about one of the most intriguing, yet underexplored, scientists, JC Bose's work, life, and legacy.

"Lopez Lomong's story is one of true inspiration. His life is a story of courage, hard work, never giving up, and having hope where there is hopelessness all around. Lopez is a true role model."?MICHAEL JOHNSON, Olympic Gold Medalist.

Running for My Life is not a story about Africa or track and field athletics. It is about outrunning the devil and achieving the impossible faith, diligence, and the desire to give back. It is the American dream come true and a stark reminder that saving one can help to save thousands more.

Lopez Lomong chronicles his inspiring ascent from a barefoot lost boy of the Sudanese Civil War to a Nike-sponsored athlete on the US Olympic Team. Though most of us fall somewhere between the catastrophic lows and dizzying highs of Lomong's incredible life, every reader will find in his story the human spark to pursue dreams that might seem unthinkable, even from circumstances that might appear hopeless. Lomong spent ten years in the Kakuma refugee camp in Turkana County, northeastern Kenya before being moved to the United States through the Unaccompanied Refugee Minor program by Toomey Residential and Community Services. His name "Lopez" was a nickname from the refugee camp that he later adopted officially.

WINNER OF THE NOBEL PEACE PRIZE • in this “courageous” (The Washington Post) memoir of survival, a former captive of the Islamic State tells her harrowing and ultimately inspiring story. Nadia Murad was born and raised in Kocho, a small village of farmers and shepherds in northern Iraq. A member of the Yazidi community, she and her brothers and sisters lived a quiet life. Nadia had dreams of becoming a history teacher or opening her own beauty salon. On August 15th, 2014, when Nadia was just twenty-one years old, this life ended. Islamic State militants massacred the people of her village, executing men who refused to convert to Islam and women too old to become sex slaves. Six of Nadia’s brothers were killed, and her mother soon after, their bodies swept into mass graves. Nadia was taken to Mosul and forced, along with thousands of other Yazidi girls, into the ISIS slave trade. Nadia would be held captive by several militants and repeatedly raped and beaten. Finally, she managed a narrow escape through the streets of Mosul, finding shelter in the home of a Sunni Muslim family whose eldest son risked his life to smuggle her to safety. Today, Nadia's story—as a witness to the Islamic State's brutality, a survivor of rape, a refugee, and a Yazidi—has forced the world to pay attention to an ongoing genocide. It is a call to action, a testament to the human will to survive, and a love letter to a lost country, a fragile community, and a family torn apart by war. It is not an enjoyable read but it's a must-read. It’s an exhaustive survival memoir. Her experiences are too brutal but yet she survived to tell her story. She was one of the few luckiest to be alive to tell her story. The more we get aware of what these cold-blooded hounds do behind the religious veil, the more we weaken them.

A story about a refugee...? No, a story about family, love, overcoming hardship, and surviving through love and friendship! Tears of horror, grief, and laughter! Anh Do is a Vietnamese-born Australian author, actor, comedian, and painter. He has appeared on Australian TV shows such as Thank God you’re here and Good News Week Very enjoyable read and also inspiring. Anh's outlook on life is refreshing and it's great to read a positive book. A highly recommended book. Anh Do was born in Vietnam on June 2, 1977. He and his family were Vietnamese refugees. They moved from his homeland to a refugee camp in Malaysia and then to Australia. He is a graduate of the University of Technology Sydney in Business Law. He is an actor and stand-up comedian. His work includes the Australian TV shows Thank God You're Here, Good News Week, and Dancing with the Stars 2007. He co-wrote and produced Footy legends along with his brother Khoa Do. He is the author of The Happiest Refugee. His awards included 2011 Australian Book of the Year, Biography of the Year, Newcomer of the Year, Indie Book of the Year Award 2011, and Non-fiction Indie Book of the Year 2011. Anh Do nearly didn't make it to Australia. His entire family came close to losing their lives on the sea as they escaped from war-torn Vietnam in an overcrowded boat. But nothing - not murderous pirates, nor the imminent threat of death by hunger, disease, or dehydration as they drifted for days - could quench their desire to make a better life in the country they had dreamed about. Life in Australia was hard, an endless succession of back-breaking work, crowded rooms, ruthless landlords, and make-do everything. But there was a loving extended family, and always friends and play and something to laugh about for Anh, his brother Khoa and their sister Tram. Things got harder when their father left home when Anh was thirteen - they felt his loss very deeply and their mother struggled to support the family on her own. His mother's sacrifice was an inspiration to Anh and he worked hard during his teenage years to help her make ends meet, also managing to graduate high school and then university. Another inspiration was the comedian Anh met when he was about to sign on for a 60-hour-a-week corporate job. Anh asked how many hours he worked. 'Four,' the answer came back, and that was it. He was going to be a comedian!

The only way to change the way you think is to reprogram the way you think. Instead of feeding your mind with negative words and ideas feed your brain with positive affirmations and ideas. As stated in the book your brain is an apartment with old furniture. Take out the old furniture and throw it away, which is negative thinking and replace it with new furniture, which is positive thinking. No matter what in your life you want to change you must feed yourself positive affirmations and be specific with the words multiple times a day, at least 10 - 20 times a day if not more. The more you are consistent with it the easier it becomes and the more noticeable the changes are. You begin to recognize the negativity from the outside and notice how you handle it with a positive response.

Autobiography and business book merge into a story with heart and solid information for building a good team and profitable business.
Jim Weber is the CEO of Brooks Running Company. He took over this company when it was a rounding error in the athletic shoe business. It’s a very different picture now and “Running with Purpose” is the story of how he accomplished the remarkable turnaround, with the help of a dedicated staff, Warren Buffett and dogged determination.
Weber’s writing style is friendly; even the business theory is interesting and easy to understand. He includes a few graphs and charts to illustrate the narrative which I found really helpful. His personal stories are woven thru the book, giving readers a look inside this business genius who is heralded by Warren Buffett and runs Brooks as a standalone business within Berkshire Hathaway.
All things considered, an intriguing read for those who enjoy biographies and/or stories about business

Discover how Brooks Running Company CEO Jim Weber transformed a failing business into a billion-dollar brand in the ultracompetitive global running market. This leadership memoir starts with Jim Weber’s seventh-grade dream to run a successful company that delivered something people passionately valued. Fast forward to 2001, Jim Weber became the CEO of Brooks. He was on his way to fulfilling his dream, but he faced strong headwinds. Jim was the struggling brand’s fourth CEO in two years, and the staff betting pool had him lasting four months. A lifelong competitor, Jim devised a one-page strategy that he believed would not only save the company but would also lay the foundation for Brooks to become a leading brand in the athletic, fitness, and outdoor categories. To succeed, Jim had to get his team to first believe it was possible and then employ the conviction, fortitude, and constancy of purpose to out-execute much larger brands. Brooks’ success was validated when Warren Buffett made it a standalone Berkshire Hathaway subsidiary in 2012. In the pages of Running with Purpose, you will find: The untold David vs. Goliath challenger brand story in which Brooks’s bold strategy and unique brand positioning fueled its move from the back of the pack to lead. The key to building a purpose-driven brand that is oriented around customer obsession, building trust, competing with heart, and having fun along the way. The six clear leadership lessons Jim has learned along his path and applies at Brooks to help managers at all levels develop into authentic leaders. How Berkshire Hathaway’s support and influence provided a tailwind for Brooks’ business and brand to surge. A riveting inside look at the ups and downs of Jim’s personal journey, which led to his conviction that life is too short not to enjoy what you do and the people by your side. Running with Purpose is a highly engaging read with insights, inspirational stories, and tangible takeaways for current and aspiring leaders, entrepreneurs, Berkshire Hathaway enthusiasts, and especially the 150+ million runners worldwide and those in the broader running community who continually invest in themselves and put positive energy into the world.

An Amazing story, Paul Alexander has the most remarkable spirit. Nothing, not even polio paralysis stopped him from living out his dreams. This is the true story of an indomitable spirit afflicted with unimaginable physical and psychological challenges. Paul Alexander's life is a saga that started in 1946 and has been profoundly shaped by the Polio epidemic of the early 1950s. Survivors of the 1950s Polio Epidemic in America are rare. Polio victims, like Paul Alexander, who require the assistance of an "Iron Lung" respirator for their life's breath, are even rarer. Paul Alexander has crafted his life against all odds and has a courageous and compelling story to share with us all. Paul wrote this entire book with a pencil in his mouth, (despite being paralyzed from the neck down!) tapping it against a keyboard. It took five years to do this.

Paul's horrific account of being a 6-year-old with an Iron Lung and the abuse he suffered by neglectful and overworked medical staff is so hard to read. It is heartbreaking and inspiring. He is still alive today and still in an iron lung. He reminds us to not forget diseases like Polio that were so devastating and thankfully have a vaccine. Really an amazing life that most people would not have made what he made of his.

Victims of Polio, their families, friends, and communities are struggling to cope with this obscure but still dangerous infectious disease. This book is a testimony to the strength of the human spirit and an affirmation of the need to continue efforts to eradicate the pestilence of Polio from the planet.  An incredible story of a beautiful human being not giving up!

Excellent book on awareness and solutions of depression. Depression is although very common but often ignored condition, affecting almost all age groups. The primary reason is a lack of awareness about its signs which may be quite subtle in the initial stages. This book beautifully explains these initial telltale signs which we often miss. It explains about depression right from its mildest form, often confused as temporary sadness, to the most severe form of suicidal
Do you feel like just staying in bed every morning? Maybe you don’t feel like going to work either and have no energy to talk to your family or meet up with friends. Or maybe someone close to you has been feeling down for a long time. Are you or your loved one going through just a bad patch? Or is it something more serious?
Could it be depression? Regardless of how successful you are in your life, there may come a time when you face low moods and sometimes even depression. This is simply a consequence of our urban lifestyle and the often stressful and disorienting circumstances in which we live. And a key to navigating through these is to understand and address them. Based on Dr. Pallavi Joshi’s extensive experience in diagnosing and treating clinical depression, Fast but Lost can help you do just that. Focusing on depression in urban India, it addresses special challenges like maintaining a work-life balance, dissatisfactory relationships, poor lifestyle, and disillusionment. This book also addresses the myths and facts about depression and its treatment. Through stories and case studies, Dr. Joshi helps you understand your own condition and/or help loved ones around you.
The concerning fact is that many people spend years or even their whole life suffering from depression without recognizing that it’s a treatable illness. Correct and timely treatment can drastically improve the quality of life of a person suffering from depression. Fast but Lost can make you aware of this silent killer and help destigmatize the illness and its treatment.

The science of happiness.jpg

Excellent book! A highly recommended book for anyone who wonders about how to find happiness or even how it works. This book does very detailed work in explaining the neurons and neurotransmitters that cause you to experience feelings of happiness, and flashbacks to high school biology! This is an enlightening, eye-opening book. The writer notes that your brain will change while reading it - literally! And it's true (in a good way).

Clinical psychologists have been dealing with miserable feelings since their discipline was established. In the last 30 years, neuroscientists have made major headway in understanding the sources of anger, depression, and fear. Today, whole industries profit from this knowledge -- producing pills for every sort of pathological mood disturbance. But until recently, few neuroscientists focused on the subject of happiness. Now, in The Science of Happiness, leading German science journalist Stefan Klein ranges widely across the latest frontiers of neuroscience and neuropsychology to explain how happiness is fostered in our brains and what biological purpose it serves (and, importantly, how we can control our negative feelings and emotions). In addition, he explains the neurophysiology of our passions (the elementary rules of which are hardwired into our brains), the power of consciousness, and how we can use it. In a final section, Klein explores the conditions required to foster the "pursuit of happiness." A remarkable synthesis of a growing body of research that has not heretofore been brought together in one accessible book, The Science of Happiness will ultimately help each of us understand our own quest for happiness -- and our fostering of it, as well. Everyone should read it. It really helps you to understand your own mind and what makes you happy and what doesn't.

This book could very well add a few years to your life. This is an enlightening, eye-opening book. The writer notes that your brain will change while reading it - literally! And it's true (in a good way).  If you value your happiness and are struggling to be happy, I'd give this book a go. Even if you are happy, read it - it'll affirm a lot of your life's choices and clear up some confusions about why we react to things the way we do and how to make your life more positive and happier - and more healthy.

After more than thirty years in the classroom, award-winning teacher Phil Done decided that it was time to retire. His days of teaching schoolchildren may have come to an end, but a teacher’s job is never truly done, and he set out to write the greatest lesson of his career: a book for educators and parents that would pass along everything he learned about working with kids. The result is this delightful and insightful teaching bible, The Art of Teaching Children. From the first-day-of-school jitters to the last day’s tears, Done writes about the teacher’s craft, classrooms and curriculums, the challenges of the profession, and the reason all teachers do it—the children.
Drawing upon decades of experience, Done shares sound guidance, time-tested tips, and sage advice: Real learning is messy, not linear. Greeting kids in the morning as they enter the classroom is one of the most important parts of the school day. If a student is having trouble, look at what you can do differently before pointing the finger at the child. Ask yourself: Would I want to be a student in my class? When children watch you, they are learning how to be people, and one of the most important things we can do for our students is to model the kind of people we would like them to be.
Done tackles topics you won’t find in any other teaching book, including Back to School Night nerves, teacher pride, lessons that bomb, the Sunday Blues, Pinterest envy, teacher guilt, and the things they never warn you about in “teacher school” but should, like how to survive lunch supervision, recess duty, and field trips. Done also addresses some of the most important issues schools face today: bullying, excessive screen time, unsupportive administrators, the system’s obsession with testing, teacher burnout, and the ever-increasing demands of meeting the diverse learning needs of students.
With great wit and wisdom, first-rate storytelling, and boundless compassion, The Art of Teaching Children is the definitive guide to educating today’s young learners and the perfect resource for teachers and parents everywhere.
